It’s giveaway time! Why do you choose Lightlife?

The team here at Lightlife is always trying to figure out what we can do better to serve you – our loyal fans. Every day I interact with our Facebook and Twitter fans, talking about everything from great recipes using Lightlife products, to family cook-outs and favorite vegetarian restaurants around the country. I’ve heard from many of you that recipes are what you’re looking for – and we’ve got lots of new ones in the works that I can’t wait to share!

We are curious though…

Why do you choose to eat meatless?

We’ve heard some say that they eat meatless for the environment and others for health reasons or animal rights. Some people just love the taste! We want to know though – what motivates you to eat meatless, and why do you choose Lightlife to help you on your journey?

For me, eating meatless was a choice I initially made for animal rights. After living a vegetarian lifestyle for several years now though, I’ve realized that the health benefits I’ve experienced personally are enough to keep me on this path for life. I chose Lightlife because of their variety of products. I know that whatever product I chose to help me add protein to my meal, I can count on that it will taste good and have a certain level of quality that I’m used to getting from them.

Leave me a comment below on this blog posting with your answer, and I will pick* one lucky winner to receive 3 Lightlife products as a prize!

Do you have a friend that eats meatless sometimes? The giveaway will stay open for a full week until 10/5 – so spread the word! We want to hear your thoughts! 🙂

  1. I choose to eat meatless for animal rights and health reason. I realized that I want my kids to grow up heatlhier than I did. I also want them to understand what goes into food and our bodies. I love lightlife because all the products have a wonderful taste. It made the transition easier for my family, and if kids approve of the taste then it has to be good. They are the critics in my household.

  2. I go meatless as a way to give my body time to recuperate from eating meat & the chemicals used to process it. I try to go meatless 4 – 5 days a week.

  3. I was raised a vegetarian, but through the years I went from raw food to liquid fasts, to eating some types of meat “socially” or just having to be flexible when there were no other options. Nowadays with so many healthy and delicious vegetarian meat substitutes available– Like Lightlife Gimme Lean and Smart Dogs (yum!)– it is so easy to eat vegetarian 100% of the time. I feel like it is a good choice for my health, for the environment, and importantly, for improved quality of life for farm animals.

I appreciate that Lightlife makes so many tasty vegetarian foods that are either organic or non-GMO!

  4. I eat meatless because when I was dieting to lose weight earlier this year (down 40 pounds!) I found it ridiculous that I had to count calories of foods such as peas and watermelon. I wanted to eat all the fruits and vegetables that my heart desired.

After going meatless, I stopped counting calories all together, lost an additional 12 pounds and have never felt healthier! I have a suspicion that humans are not built to digest animal products!

  5. I initially went meatless because I was experiencing some serious health problems, specifically refractory reflux. Medication did not seem to help, and after several different doctor visits, a holistic physician suggested my body might have trouble breaking down saturated fat or oil foods in general. He suggested I cut animal products (all of them) and fried foods. I stopped getting sick every day within a week. Once I went vegan on a dietary level, I learned a lot about animal rights and committed to veganism on a lifestyle level. I cannot imagine ever going back to the way I was…you just can’t unlearn something so serious!!

  6. I choose Lifelight, because I know I’m helping the animals and the environment. I’m also promoting a healthy lifestyle for myself and those around me. Let’s not forget that the products are amazing and taste great!

  7. I have been a vegetarian since I was about 13. I decided that meat was yucky! Just picturing rotting meat… ugh… it wasn’t hard to go veggie! But it was hard eating vegetarian in a house full of meat-eaters. For years, I ate nothing but pasta and cheese. Now that I am an adult and can buy my own groceries, I rely on companies like Lightlife for delicious vegetarian options. I have even brought my husband around with Lightlife deli slices! 😉

  9. I never did like eating meat because of animal rights but years ago the alternatives were pretty, well, horrid. As meat alternatives improved, becoming vegetarian became easier and now there is no turning back. Lightlife offers great tasting alternatives that make not eating meat very easy.

  10. I haven’t gone meatless, but I am married to a longtime vegetarian and generally eat meatless at home. His motivation is animal rights and environmental concerns. Mine is that it’s stupid to cook more than one meal or not eat as a family. He is also a diabetic and needs to be careful to eat enough protein and fewer carbs. Lightlife has helped us to do that, and has helped me salvage (even improve upon) many meat-based recipes that I grew up with.

  11. The main reason I eat meatless id for health reasons, heart disease and high blood pressure run on both sides of my family. Eating a veggie/meatless diet helps me eat healthy and keeps me out of the fast food restaurants. While sometime I may crave the taste of meat, I dislike the idea of what meat actually is and I just cannot eat it. Litelife products help me satisfy those meat cravings while still avoiding meat and still eating healthy. I use pretty much every product you make on a regular basis, I make a very delicious “meat sauce” for pasta using Smart Ground and it’s one of my husbands favorite dishes that I make.

  12. I originally started eating meatless because I genuinely “lost my taste” for meat. About 8 years ago I found I couldn’t stand the smell or taste of meat dishes I used to enjoy, so I stopped eating them. This was likely fueled by a combination of lessons learned in my high school cooking class (that cut of meat comes from where??), plus various books I had recently read (Fast Food Nation and The Jungle, amongst others). It has evolved since then; I still can’t stomach the idea of eating meat, but now there’s humane and ethical reasons in there too, plus a desire to be “eco-friendly” and to maintain my own health. Eating meatless has made me healthier than ever! I enjoy Lightlife products as a way to help boost the protein in my diet, and my husband (who went veggie purely for health reasons) really enjoys the occasional faux meat dish. We love smart dogs and veggie sausage/bacon, and pretty much every other Lightlife item we’ve ever tried!

  13. I always knew that eating meat was eating animals, but I don’t think that I ever really processed that for the first 26 years of my life. It was not until after I had children of my own that my own perceptions and awareness of the world around me increased. Maybe it was all the post-pregnancy hormones but I distinctly remember holding my sweet 10 month old baby boy and realizing it was wrong to eat other living creatures. So I guess you can say my initial reasoning was linked to animal rights. Since then I have found many reasons for maintaining a vegetarian life-style such as health and the environment. Now my husband and both my kids are vegetarian and Lifelight is a staple in our household. After trying many vegetarian products in the beginning we found that Lifelight was hands down the best tasting out there. It’s a must have especially for packing school lunches.

  14. I began eating meatless 14 years ago when I realized the horrific ways animals are treated so that we may use them for food, “entertainment” and clothing. I couldn’t stand the thought of more lives being lost by my selfish and destructive cravings. It was a hard transition to make 14 years ago because meatless products weren’t as readily available, but now it’s easy, inexpensive and delicious! Lightlife has certainly revolutionized my daily menu with its variety of deli slices and ground “meat” for hamburgers. I also love to cook, so thanks largely in part to Lightlife, the possibilities are endless! I’ve even seen Lightlife on the menus of my favourite restaurants.

  15. I’ve been a vegetarian since my freshman year in high school. I’ve always been an animal lover and one night I just decided I didn’t want to eat them anymore, and that was that. It’s definitely got health benefits too. I love that there are so many great tasting products out now; when I first made the switch, it was so difficult because there just weren’t options. I love that I can grill out with friends and enjoy a veggieburger with them rather than being stuck with a salad.

  16. I am a vegan because I believe animals are here to live their lives just as humans are. As they say, animals are not here FOR us, they are here WITH us. I ate animals and all their byproducts for most of life, then caught a conscience about five years ago. I am not sure why it took so long, as I have always been an animal lover, and appreciate animals more than humans, in general, because they are pure of intent. I never felt good about eating them, however when I ate animals in forms like ground meat, and hot dogs, I didn’t think about it as much. This is why it’s perfectly acceptable for me to eat meat substitutes, and I’m thankful for products like Lightlife. Some of the Lightlife products do contain egg whites, so I do not eat those (factory egg farming is one of the most abominable industries on the planet), but many others of their products are very good on occasion. I would be happy to win this offer!

  17. I chose to go meatless because I wanted to see what it looked like from a different perspective. Soon I started to learn about how it affected the environment and animals, and soon I’m vegan. Lightlife has the most delicious products that I’ve ever tasted that have helped me along my journey and helped me see that I don’t need all of the meat in my system to have something so tasty and wholesome. Thanks to Lightlife, I’ve encountered a new world and have been vegetarian for over five years.

  18. My husband and I went vegan (over night) for health reasons – I was a vegetarian for over 2 years back in the late 90’s. However since we went vegan I am more aware (I think I just tried to block the thoughts previously) of the horrors that animals endure so we can ‘eat’ them and/or their milk, eggs, etc. I feel better, I do like to use meat substitutes sometimes since I grew up on meat and do miss a good meatloaf now and then. Thank you for LightLIfe and the great products you produce.

  19. Why am I vegetarian? That’s easy….two reasons. #1 It hit me one day that eating animals is wrong. Not that I didnt know before but it actually registered. #2 I realized after being vegetarian for a while I was healthier.

Why do I eat Lightlife? That is also easy. Because although I know in my heart and in my mind eating meat is not the answer, Lightlife taste allows my stomache to go along with it.

  20. I choose to eat meatless because I adore animals. I can’t imagine eating them, and the more time I spend with animals, the more I feel this way. I am experimenting with veganism because I am interested in the health benefits. Some of the mock meat products available in grocery stores are filled with chemicals and fat, and I enjoy Lightlife’s products that help me stay compassionate yet healthy.

  21. I originally chose to become vegetarian because I believed strongly in animal rights. I became educated on how animals were inhumanely treated and it disturbed me so much I couldn’t bear to eat another animal. After several years I learned the huge health benefits. Ten years ago I became a vegetarian and now have two children that my husband and I raise as vegetarians. My daughter who is six fully understands why we are vegetarians and wants to be one for the rest of her life. 🙂 My son started saying, “yuck, meat” when he was two everytime he saw a picture of meat in a magazine or tv advertisement. I am very proud of our decision to be a vegetarian family and am thankful there are so many meatless options out there for us!

  22. I became a vegetarian in high school for reasons I don’t recall; since that time, I have only eaten meat when pregnant (at 19) and when nursing. At 24, I am a dietary vegan (…and avid knitter…) and mother to a child, both of us with serious food allergies that are avoided by consuming vegan food items. We love Lightlife because they allow us to share food together. As a mindful parent, I am conscious of waste when preparing food for my child, knowing that he may or may not refuse to eat some or all of what I put on his plate. What then? If I’ve prepared him a meal of chicken nuggets and a glass of milk, I must either wrap his leftovers or throw them in the garbage. However, if I’ve prepared him a tempeh wrap or a wrap with Fakin’ Bacon (Smoky Tempeh Strips), Lettuce, Tomato, and Vegan “Mayo”, I can simply eat the leftovers myself. (Ah, parenthood.) Even for myself, I love making a wrap with lettuce, Vegan “Mayo”, and Smart Cutlets Spicy Sweet & Sour. Thank you!

  23. I eat meatless products mainly to save animals and our environment from the effects of factory farming. But in my studies as Health Coach I have discovered that by eating a mostly plant based diet, I receive many of the micro-nutrients that are missing by eating lots of animal products, which may in turn protect me and my family from the ravages of chronic diseases such as Diabetes, Cancer and Heart Disease.

I love the quote from Michael Pollan : “Eat food, not too much, mostly plants”

If I had a voice it would be to suggest Lightlife make more Fermented foods.

  24. We eat vegetarian for health reasons. I’m raising my 3 year old daughter as a vegetarian to promote a healthy lifestyle. I also believe in animal rights. Eating Lifelight is very convenient with our busy schedule.

  25. I stopped eating red meat as a teenager for animal welfare reasons. I continue not to eat it, 15 years later, because of health reasons and because factory farming is so bad for both animals and the environment. I also just happen to love vegetables and ethnic vegetarian cooking! I do eat chicken and seafood in moderation, but try to purchase only organic or humane certified chicken and sustainable seafood. My husband is a real meat lover, but at home we eat a primarily vegetarian diet.

  26. 10 years ago, I started having health problems associated with eating meat. I became a Vegetarian, and my over all health started improving dramatically. I have always been a very sick person, and my immunity started to heal. I met my husband, who was already a Vegetarian, but didn’t make healthy choices. In the 7 years we have been married, our diet has majorly improved, and we eat very healthy. I am also a marathon runner for Christ, and having the right fuel for what I do is so important. I love your chicken breast products on just about anything! At night, we eat a huge spinach salad with so many raw veggies, and add the chicken breast for protein. When I became a Vegetarian, I was in the beginning stages of high blood pressure, and had extremely high cholesterol. Now, I am so thankful to say, I have zero problems with either of these issues. Thank you for what you do! God Bless!

  27. I grew up vegetarian as an extension of the religion I was raised in. I have since opened my horizons and no longer hold these hard fast beliefs as given by that church. What stuck was vegetarianism but for much different reasons. I decided that it was not necessity to eat meat. By eating meat when we don’t need to we are dismissing the entire life of an animal as meaningless, something just to satisfy what we want when we want. To me this seemed arrogant. To eat an animal when one needs is one thing but to go to KFC a few times a week is so much different. So, to respect animals’ lives I continue to be vegetarian and struggle daily with the idea of going vegan and feel happy because of the lifestyle I chose.

  28. I’ve been vegetarian for 15+ years because I wouldnt kill an animal without good reason. And I dont need to eat meat to survive. Therefore eating meat would be killing animals without good reason. Now that I have children(9 & 5) I am glad to pass this lifestyle on to them.

  30. i stopped eating meat almost 25 years ago. i am an animal lover and i never felt that it was right to kill. i have remained vegetarian all of these years, and still choose not to eat any type of animal out of compassion, but also because i know how much healthier it is and how completely unnecessarily it is. My children and husband are also vegetarian. We love lightlife tempeh and deli slices and purchase them regularly. Thanks for the giveaway!

It’s all about kindness and conscientious living. We love, love the Gimme Lean, the kids love the veggie dogs, we also love the fact that they’re super healthy!!

  33. I don’t eat meat because I don’t think an innocent creature should have to die just so I can have something to eat. With all of the other options to choose from, it’s just ridiculous. And I choose Lightlife because the products are delicious & nutritious. 🙂

  34. I went vegetarian primarily for the animals. I went vegan for health and for the animals. And, I appreciate the other reasons for being meatless–meat is a drain on natural resources, and more people can eat if less meat is consumed. The production of meat is a strain on the environment. I love Gimme Lean!

  38. I have been a vegetarian since I was challenged in college 20 years ago from my Economics professor. I have no idea what the topic was, but my ears perked up when he said, “Anyone who reads ‘The Jungle’ by Upton Sinclair will no longer be a meat eater.” I was a huge meat eater and not a healthy meat eater either. So I thought there was no way one book about a Polish Immigrant during the Depression was going to change my ways. I marched to the library, checked out the book, and that’s all it took. I have not looked back nor do I miss meat. In fact, after several years I finally converted my “meat and potatoes” husband, thanks in large part due to the yummy LightLife products.

  39. I have been a vegetarian for over 12 years and my health has improved because of it. I study epigenetics, a new biology, that shows that we are NOT victims of our genes but can change what our genes do by changing our diet, exercise, thinking and stress. I believe in this so much that I have written a new book on the subject called “Food for Thought – An Epigenetic Guide to Wellness”, http://www.georgefebish.com and do a popular BLOG on this subject at http://georgefebish.wordpress.com. It is time we all take our health into our own hands. It is not the government or our doctors responsibility but ours!

  44. I choose to eat meatless for health reasons. I was lucky to give birth to a wonderful, healthy baby girl, but suffered several complications during my pregnancy and following her birth. In an effort to improve my health and that of my family, I began researching the benefits of vegetarianism and, then, veganism. I’d had a poor diet prior to becoming pregnant, and ate as well as I knew how during my pregnancy, but now I can make better informed choices, and feel good knowing that I am raising my child to eat healthfully and also life a life filled with compassion for her fellow creatures.

  46. I never really enjoyed the taste or feel of meat growing up, then later when I learned about the way farm animals are treated, that just solidified it in my mind. I do not feel the need to eat meat substitutes all the time, but when I do, I like to experiment with different brands and types.

  48. I am vegetarian for health reasons. our bodies were not made to eat meat. the original diet given by God was vegetables, fruits and grains. As a Christian i also see my body as God’s temple and i want to keep my body clean and healthy just like it was created.

  49. I choose to eat less meat because I value life. I care deeply for living creatures of all types and didn’t believe that it was right for me to take the life of a defenseless creature for my own benefit. I looked at my dog and thought “I wouldn’t eat her so why am I eating other animals that have the same feelings?” Later on it also became because of health. I found I feel better after I stopped eating animals then I did before.

  52. Why do I choose to eat meatless? For me, it has been a journey. I do so for multiple reasons, some which are common and some which are personal. I do so for taste; out of the obligation to treat my body correctly; I do so out of the personal struggle to control my weight; I desire to give myself every chance to live a healthy life as long as possible; I choose to do so out of leadership and show others it can be done—-I eat meatless and choose LightLife because, for me, it is the best option to acheive my personal goals and support my personal beliefs of treating my body with respect. I choose meatless and Lightlife to live the best life I possibly can.

But as time went on I felt healthier and also opened up a whole new world of veggie’s and food I’ve never tried before. Along the way I learned about environmental benefits, and animal rights issues tied into my reasons I’ve stayed vegetarian/vegan for over 14 years now. 60. I was a vegetarian for a long time, then went vegan last year. I like meat substitutes, particularly your Smart Dogs! A friend just told me about your Gimme Lean sausage, so I’m very eager to try that!

One thing I think you could do is expand your product line with vegan BBQ items, and more vegan beef selections.

I also agree with several posters that lower prices and coupons would be great; it is expensive to eat as we do, and we are willing to pay more for quality, kind products – but it’s awfully nice to be rewarded for our choices!

  61. Thank you all so much for your feedback! The passion you’ve shown for why you choose to eat meatless is absolutely incredible, and I can’t thank you enough for your eagerness to share that passion with us here at Lightlife. Reading each response has been beyond fun for me and quite frankly they have truly blown me away. You all are why we do what we do!
